Additional The Bee Gees - Their Greatest Hits: The Record Information

Don't look for a richly illustrated, critical essay-packed hagiography with this 40-track, double-disc overview of the Bee Gees recording career. In typical, telling fashion, the Brothers Gibb have eschewed such exercises in ego inflation and simply let the best of their remarkable body of music speak for itself. Through it all, their familiar voices lock together in the sort of transcendent, seemingly genetic harmony that few singers since the Everly Brothers (early Gibb inspirations) have managed. Beginning with the plaintive 1966 hit "New York Mining Disaster 1941," this set traces the Gibbs' journey from successful Beatles-era balladeers to '70s white R&B gods and the undisputed kings of disco (we're reminded here that their shrewd metamorphosis began with "Nights on Broadway" and "Jive Talkin'"--long before the mega-success of "Saturday Night Fever"). But even as that dance craze faded, again threatening to turn the Bee Gees into pop anachronisms, the Gibbs simply stepped out of the limelight for a while, turning their talents to MOR hit-making for the likes of Samantha Sang, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, and Dionne Warwick. Those hits ("Emotion," "Heartbreaker," "Islands in the Stream") are featured here in modern rerecordings by the band, along with the Streisand-Barry Gibb duet, "Guilty." And if the Gibbs haven't had much of an American chart presence in recent years, they remain superstars throughout the rest of the world, a richly crafted pop music presence that simply won't be denied. --Jerry McCulley

What Customers Say About The Bee Gees - Their Greatest Hits: The Record:

ROCK/POP LEGENDS MY RATING 50 STARS AWESOME

I found myself wanting a collection of BEE GEE hits, after the untimely death of Maurice. One disc is much better than the other, but the oldies are indeed goodies and I'm glad I bought it.

If you love the Bee Gees then this is a MUST BUY. Love this CD.

However, the biggest complaint with this set is undeniably its VOLUME LEVEL. It is tough, tough, tough to quibble with the music here. "How Deep Is Your Love", "Love So Right" and "Love You Inside Out" are more than just guilty pleasures, they're great tunes. The new recordings of Gibb brother-penned tunes that were hits for others could *easily* be jettisoned in favor of the above mentioned tunes. Give me tape hiss and natural volume peaks anyday over this. The comp could be a little more expansive, giving us better and needed insight into the early and pre-1975 Bee Gees, such as "Mr.

The dynamic range is literally compressed away, with excessive noise reduction applied to eliminate the resulting increased hiss. "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "Lonely Days" and "To Love Somebody" are essential listening. In a futile effort to keep with industry "standards", the alleged mastering engineer raises the volume to ridiculous and unnecessarily loud levels. Natural" and "Morning of My Life". Not huge hits, but then not everything here is either. All of this overprocessing kills the "breath" in the mixes and life in the performances, resulting in a very unspectacular, one-dimensional listening experience.

This music deserves better.

What's not to love. This is the Bee Gee's. You know, the 3 brothers Gibb that are masters of harmony. Nothing ever sounded so sweet to the ears.
